What warms the heart more than homemade scones with scrumptious jam and cream? How about homemade scones with scrumptious jam and cream in a delightfully cosy tea room right in the heart of Sydney Harbour?

Sound gorgeously quaint? Well, The Tea Cosy Tea Rooms on Sydney's famous The Rocks certainly fits that description.

My partner and I stumbled upon this humble abode during a holiday to Sydney. The Rocks was our destination for the market that lined the streets. As our stomachs began to rumble we went in search of food. The Irish Design Shop looked like nothing more than a shop selling Celtic goods, but a sign lured us inside. This sign I speak of was rather explicit, stating that scones were currently baking.

So inside we went. At first we felt that the sign for scones had deceived us, for it did not look like there was a cafe at all. Through the windy hallway we wandered, past cramped rooms featuring an abundance of Celtic jewellery.

At the very back of the period building we at last smelt the scent of scones wafting towards our eager noses. The cafe area had upbeat Irish folk tunes serenading the visitors already tucked into their scones. Outside too, there were people enjoying the sunshine in a tucked away alley that had been fitted perfectly with cute tables and umbrellas.

So we hastily ordered our scones. The choices of jams slowed down our haste, with everything from traditional strawberry to a unique pear jam. As scones would not be complete without a beverage, a cup of tea was on a our list too.

When asked where we wanted to be seated, we glanced outside, the sun appealing to us (having come from a cold Victorian winter, Sydney offered sunshine that was rare in Melbourne in June). Upon seeing how busy it was outside, the waitress asked us if we wanted to go upstairs. Curious, we agreed.

So up a narrow staircase we went. On each step was a strategically placed teapot with an adorable hand-knitted tea cosy of varying shapes and colours on each. This little feature had the ability to send warmth through our hearts and bring a smile to our hungry faces.

Through some more rooms upstairs that were set up for larger numbers of diners, the waitress led us out on to the balcony. So there we sat, tucked in a corner on a lovely balcony with the sunshine sitting perfectly above us, watching the crowds of people below explore the market on The Rocks. Perfection.

Such perfection reached a new level when our food was served. The scones came in a decorative tiered basket, four large scones, two plain and two with delicious dried fruit. And the tea? Well, the teapot featured a hand-knitted tea cosy like the ones that were on the staircase. And tea seems to taste better when served with such cuteness.

The jam? Amazing. The melt-in-your-mouth flavour of the pear jam was unlike anything my taste buds had experienced before. The sweetness of the triple berry jam was like a burst of happiness when teamed with smooth cream and thick scones.

The Tea Cosy was just as the name suggests - a cosy place to enjoy tea and scones with an Irish twist.
