The quest for Sydney's best kid-friendly pub is not one my friends and I take lightly. Now with a total of 5 children between us - and a strong unwillingness to give up our social lives - we have some serious motivation to find the best pub to enjoy a quiet beer and a laugh on a Sunday afternoon with our brood in tow.

And I think, at last, I can say we've struck gold. Drumroll, please.

. in Alexandria is THE best place to go for a quiet beer and a meal for the whole family. With Marrickville's Henson Park Hotel and the Coogee Bay Pavilion coming in at second and third place respectively, the Rocks Brewing Co. knocks the competition out of the water for the following very good reasons.

1) The central location. With half the gang located in the inner west and half in the eastern beaches, Alexandria (the Mascot end) suits everyone, so nobody has to rush off early anticipating an hour stuck in the car on the way home.

2) There is TONNES of space for the children to run around. And I don't mean a gloomy den indoors, or a Lord of the Flies style space where large children (practically tweens) run amok unsupervised. I mean outdoors, room-to-ride-a-trike space, with awesome things to climb on and plenty of options for hide and seek.

3) Practically everyone who goes there (at least on a Saturday or Sunday mid-arvo/early dinner time) has kids, or is cool with kids. The staff are friendly and unflustered, and each time we've visited, our kids have made new little buddies to dance along to the band or swap colouring pencils with.

4) The food is good. It's not super amazing (in fact it would be the only thing I'd improve if I was being really picky) but it's good enough to keep you coming back for more. The beer is, as you'd anticipate, excellent – a huge variety of styles, and they're as fresh and cold as you'll find. And the waffle fries are a massive hit with the littlies.

5) It's never crowded. This is where second-place pub the Henson Park Hotel is unfortunately a victim of its own awesomeness. Too popular, too small. . is massive, so even when there are quite a few bodies in there it doesn't feel jammed. We never book, we just rock up (no pun intended) and have our choice of tables – N.B. this is probably partly because we meet at the odd time of 4:30pm.

If you feel like taking your children to a pub to meet friends is just more trouble than it's worth, think again. Visit . and revisit your old, pub-dwelling self again, even if just for an afternoon.
