My experience at the hairdressers doesn't always match up with my expectations. What I want is a luxurious experience that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, instead I often spend the time flicking through year old New Idea's and staring at celebrity cellulite bored out of my brain while my colour sets.

is a recently opened salon that is not only a New Idea-free zone but also a vintage clothing shop. I was intrigued enough by this pairing to head down to the trendily restored area of Port Adelaide to meet with owner Pemily Douglas. The aptly named 'Pin Up Lounge' is a dream come true. Luxurious Kevin Murphy hair products are lined up next to recent issues of Yen, Oyster and InStyle Magazine. Racks of vintage fashion collected over the years by Pemily are just begging to be browsed through and if fashion is not your thing they have a mini library you can lounge around in while surfing the net on their complimentary ipad and free wifi.
"I didn't want to be a normal salon" Pemily, 31, explains as the inspiration behind her unique salon. "I wanted to stand out". Something she is certain to do as the word-of-mouth support continues to grow and help bring new business to the area. "This part of the Port has so much character… Lipson Street always has something happening, it's a great place to be a part of".

If you're searching for something more than your standard hairdressing experience then head on down to Carlton Street to discover this Port Adelaide treasure for yourself.
