Thornbury and Preston residents rejoice – there's a new café in town. Slap bang in the middle of the residential area on Dundas Street between Victoria Road and Station Street, The Old Milk Bar is quietly making a name for itself. There's a distinct lack of competition away from High Street, but even if there was, The Old Milk Bar would come out fighting.

Opening one month ago, locals have been quick to jump on board, with the usual Brunch brigade happily queuing outside the old wooden fence on the weekends. Even on a Thursday lunchtime there is a steady stream of punters, especially considering Dundas Street is light on foot traffic. A lovely partially covered courtyard with enough room for prams and pooches overlooks Dundas Street. Inside it's instantly welcoming with an easy, industrial style design that doesn't detract from it's down to earth corner shop positioning.

It's all about the coffee, obviously. And it's magnificent. A flat white is smooth and mellow but with a low down dirty kick to get the blood pumping. The menu is totally angst inducing. In for lunch we couldn't help but check out the breakfast offerings (served until 3pm). There's clever twists on old faithfuls: crushed pea, mint and fetta with beetroot relish and poached egg on the ever popular Dr Marty's crumpets. Or Buttermilk hotcake with honeycomb, coconut yoghurt, berry compote and mulberries. So very tempting, but this being a weekday we opt for the healthy Freekah salad with hot smoked salmon and the coconut chicken salad.

Move over quinoa, there's a new kid in town. The freekah salad is a bright zingy delight – dotted with pomegranate, baby roasted carrots and crowned with a soft yolk egg. It's fair to say all major food groups are covered. The coconut chicken salad came with big chunks of poached chicken and fiery slivers of red chilli on light thai spiced noodles. Delicious, nutritious and all served with a friendly smile. Welcome to the neighbourhood Old Milk Bar - we're mighty pleased to have you.
