Sydney is currently a melting pot of opening bars, emerging dining concepts, and the latest hipster hangouts. It's all about the new, the shiny, the unique. Days of meeting at 'the local' seem to be fading fast, like an echo that becomes fainter and fainter until... it just disappears. Well, The Oaks Hotel in Neutral Bay got wind of this and decided to bring back 'the local' with a vengeance. Because the only thing that's better than something new, is something old - with all it's history, wisdom, and culture - that's made new all over again.
[BREAK]
The Oaks Hotel has been a popular local spot since its opening in the late 1800's when it was a public bar catering to the hoards of men grabbing a pint before returning home after work. A lot has changed since those days, yet owner, Mr Thompson, has made sure that its heritage is not forgotten. Architectural drawings of the hotel line the corridors and the pool rooms upstairs are named after their previous uses when The Oaks doubled as accommodation. There is something quaint about booking Nancy's Room or The Sitting Room for your gathering. These numerous upstairs rooms retain their art deco design and the walls are lined with original prints of The Oaks Hotel, trans-Australian railway adverts, and scenes of Sydney during the 60's, 70's and 80's.
[BREAK]
With all its history and culture, the Oaks Hotel has a grand reputation, however its downstairs Bar & Grill was showing its age a little too much. Hence, Paul Kelly Design was commissioned to revitalise the area and transform the old Bar & Grill into a new dining area. When you step inside the newly redesigned Bar and Grill, aptly named The Oaks Butcher, you are immediately enveloped in a cosy, masculine emporium that evokes carnivorous primal instincts. The crackling fire, striking red tartan carpet, and exposed wine cellar add to the ambience, while the wall hangings of native Australian foliage maintain The Oaks Hotel's historic culture.
[BREAK]
Not only has the interior been given an overhaul, so has the menu. Highly acclaimed chef, Danny Russo, was given free reign to reinterpret and elevate the traditional Bar & Bistro offerings, and he didn't hold back. With dishes such as buffalo wings with blue cheese aoili, buttermilk fried chicken, ocean trout gravlax, burgers on fresh brioche buns, and crispy pork belly with apple cider relish, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
[BREAK]
In conjunction with the opening of The Oaks Butcher Bar & Grill, the hotel is offering a primal Meat Masterclass to be hosted by the meat maestro, Anthony Puharich. The event will take place on Tuesday the 20th of August and will consist of 3 courses dedicated to meat, paired with robust wines chosen to enhance the flavours of each dish. That's not all, though. There is more to come from The Oaks Hotel. Paul Kelly Design has also been commissioned to redesign The Garden Pavilion, which is due to open in September, just in time for Spring. So stay tuned because there's more to come from this new old local!
