First released in 1885,
The Mikado is Gilbert and Sullivan’s most well-known operetta. And it continues to be a popular production today, so much so it was made into a feature film,
Topsy Turvy, in 1999. Now, director Stuart Maunder has decided to bring it live to the stages of the
Sydney Opera House from August 27 to October 31.
The comical opera set in Ancient Japan is about a love triangle involving the Lord High Executioner who plans to marry his lady, but she is secretly in love with the son of the royal court disguised as a travelling musician.
Was that just a bit too much to take in? Don’t worry; it’s only normal for a Gilbert and Sullivan romp.
Filled with ludicrous jokes you can expect to have a good laugh. The names of the characters like Yum Yum and Nanki-Poo are even enough to get you giggling. Plus you'll be entertained by some dancing accompanied by great melodies. And like all of Gilbert and Sullivan’s 12 other operatic collaborations, a happy ending can be expected.
Anthony Warlow who just spent the last 12 months performing in
The Phantom Of The Opera, will join an all-round cast taking the lead role of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner. So there’s no doubt that there will be in any boring bits during the performance.
