Famous for its fine seafood fare, Lobster Cave has been entertaining patrons in Beaumaris for more than 25 years. As a connoisseur of seafood, I had to check out this restaurant owned by Bill Ferg.

On a cold Saturday evening, we arrived at the doorstep of Lobster Cave. As we approached the door a friendly waiter greeted us and ushered us inside after checking our booking.

Décor and service
When we were seated and left with elegant menus, I took in the ambient dining atmosphere. The restaurant is divided into two moderate sized seating areas with wood panelled dining room and built-in fish tanks filled with colourful fish and weeds illuminated by LED lights. There is a nice bar at one end. The seating area is dotted with wooden tables and chairs. There is an alfresco dining area with overhead heaters which provide oomph to the diners.
Almost every table was filled with smiling patrons of all ages engaged in animated conversations which was a testament to the popularity of the restaurant. Delicious aroma pervaded the air and filled our nostrils.

Friendly and attentive wait staff made sure that our glasses were never empty. Wet towels were readily available and bowls provided for shells were replaced frequently.

Food and drinks
I found out that there are couple of different menus. One is for the normal diners and another one for the Cave members. There is also a specials menu. Each menu flaunts tantalising seafood, waygu sirloin, pork belly, duck and vegetarian options. There are both ala carte and set menu options. Our mouth watered as we perused the premium selection menu.

After a spirited discussion, we decided on the Premium Selection Grilled 'Seaferg' ($299). This signature selection platter included grilled whole rock lobster, two whole lobster tails, scallops with prosciutto, QLD Moreton Bay bugs, jumbo W.A. Scampi, oven roasted king prawns, Alaskan snow crab, barbequed whole baby snapper served with fragrant seafood pilaf, lemon & lime, sanbaizu, rocket aoli, lemon paprika butter, wasabi soy & ginger. There were cheaper options starting from $99 but we preferred this deluxe platter.

As we waited for our order to arrive, I felt my hunger being aroused by the sights, sounds and smells of my surrounds. Our food finally arrived with a flourish on our table. The beautifully presented platter literally turned heads. A lady at our neighbouring table asked with a smile what we had ordered and then wished us good luck with finishing this mammoth platter.

It was a feast fit for the kings. We had not realised how big the platter was at the time of ordering. The grilled lobster was amazing, the lobster tails were tasty, scallops were yum, king prawns were scrummy. The crab legs were huge. With the aid of pliers we eagerly cracked open the shells and devoured the fresh crab meat. The snapper was succulent and the Moreton bay buys were plump and tasty. Pilaf was quite flavoursome. The dips made excellent companions to the fabulous seafood. I died and found myself in seafood heaven. As our tongues relished each and every seafood selection involuntary oohs and aahs escaped our lips.

My dining partner and I worked as a team and slowly navigated our way through the awe-inspiring platter. I was thankful that we had not ordered any entrees.

For drinks, I had a glass of rose and a fergasm cocktail. A potent mixture of Malibu, lemon, mint and ice-cream, fergasm came with a complimentary cocktail shaker. I found this cocktail quite interesting. It was more like an alcoholic smoothie rather than a cocktail. The glass of rose was lovely.

Our waiter offered the dessert menu which we politely declined. There was really no room left for dessert after our sumptuous feast. We succeeded in finishing only half of the platter and requested the leftovers to be packed for home. I noted with amusement that others seemed to be doing the same.

When we requested the bill, a waiter brought out a small complimentary plate of chocolates, mini cupcakes and small shot glasses of port. Port was potent and yummy. It was a delicious way to finish our dinner.

We left the restaurant with a gratified tummy, satiated taste buds and a spring to our steps.
