Dinner for two for under $30 - is this still possible? It is at the Kathmandu Cottage on Victoria Street, West Melbourne. It's just around the corner from Errol Street, the heart of comedy. There are many other cafes and restaurants in this area to cater for every multicultural taste whim but we chose The Kathmandu Cottage.

Despite having many customers and one long table of young men this was a surprisingly very quiet restaurant. Perhaps we were just deep in conversation but I didn't notice people come and go. There's also outdoor seating for the warmer months.

I did notice that the vegetarian dishes we ordered were only $12.50 each. They have the cheapest ever bowl of rice and (made fresh on site) naan bread which were only $2.50 each. Complimentary papadums were served with a mint dip prior to our meal.

We ordered the eggplant curry with potatoes and peas in a mild sauce, which I absolutely loved. We also ordered the vegetable korma which is a creamy cashew nuts sauce. This was definitely the best I have tasted in a very long time.

The rice and other dishes were generous serves and in fact we did not eat all the food. For meat lovers there are no lamb, chicken or beef dishes more expensive than $15.50 each. For starters you can order a lentil soup for just $6.50 and the most expensive meal on their menu is $21.50 for the Kathmandu Tandoori Sizzler which is an assortment of Tandoori dishes served with salad and chutney. It includes lamb cutlets, tandoori chicken, chicken Tikka and seekh kebabs.

The cafe is well known to locals as it was in the area since before it became trendy. According to one waitress it has been there for a least 20 years. It's not upmarket or newly renovated but the food and service are great. This is a licensed and BYO restaurant and highly recommended for a great budget meal.
