The Importance of Being Earnest

Oscar Wilde's last most popular play, The Importance of Being Earnest, is now treading the boards at the Belvior St Theatre and will be running until the 30th of November.

Evidently it's the same production by Ridiculusmus that packed out Sydney Opera House for a brief season back in 2006, and if that's the case then we should be in for a treat.

The Importance of Being Earnest was written way back in 1895 and is a romantic comedy about a group of young aristocrats tying themselves in knots trying to maintain a number a false identities which they use to avoid unappealing social occasions.

It premiered to great success at St James's Theatre in London, however it only ran for 83 shows before Oscar's lover's father, the The Marquess of Queensberry, started the legal troubles which led to his eventual imprisonment.

You can book tickets on the Belvoir website.

If you are a real keen bean you can download the entire play here.

For a bit of fun, here is a Python sketch about Wilde et al. Here is another which Wilde would have appreciated.

WHEN: 30 October - 30 November
WHERE: Belviour St Theatre, Surry Hills
COST: $54
