It's low lying along the river, dwarfed now by some sky scrapers either side but it is an iconic landmark on the Brisbane River and if you haven't visited you should go.

Customs House was built in 1889 by the architect Charles McLay - precisely for that purpose of collecting customs duty from all the goods that were coming into Brisbane. The Port at the time was much further down the river. When the Port moved to the mouth of the river, Customs House was closed down in 1988.

Mercifully it was rescued by The University of Queensland and is now a Heritage listed Building. It is rumoured that it acquired the building for a dollar. It had fallen into disrepair and it was a bit of a white elephant. However the University started a fund raising campaign to renovate it and this was completed in 1994. Since then it has functioned as a restaurant, it is used for concerts and UQ events and hosts parties and celebrations.

The restaurant overlooking the river is a fabulous place to enjoy a dinner or a lunch and with the lunch time specials that are on offer this is good value and the food is excellent.

What I really enjoy is going to a Sunday concert and then staying on for lunch with some friends. The perfect Sunday afternoon.
