On 31 August, 1938, two mail bags full of miner's wages were stolen from a train travelling between Cloncurry and Duchess. The persons responsible were never caught.
The Great Train Robbery has remained a mystery for 72 years – until now.
The Workshops Rail Museum (
North Street, North Ipswich), is offering visitors the chance to become an old fashioned detective for the day. The task? To discover who committed this bold and audacious crime.
The Deputy Detectives will be given clues and information to crack the case. You can create crime fighting tools at the Cops and Robbers Creation Station; collect fingerprints and create a reward poster at the Police Stations; and get more information at the Great Train Robbery Display. Once you've found out whodunit, reward yourself with a game of Cops and Robbers at the children sized Workshops Town (complete with police station and jail) or find horseback robbers hidden in the giant Model Railway.
For a small additional charge, you can make a getaway on the Mini Getaway Train ($3 per ride) or create a Wanted poster with a photograph of yourself ($5.) There are also free activity sheets available for download on the website.
The Great Train Robbery exhibit is an exciting experience for all ages. The Workshops Museum is open from 9.00am until 5.00pm daily, but some of the Great Train Robbery exhibits operate during limited hours. Check the website for more information.
