Vintage dresses in all their loveliness taunt me from a window with their effortless style. Lovely lace, cream crochets, lace up boots, leather handbags, floral dresses. I must be imagining it. For a fix of vintage wonder, to feel part of an era gone by, one would usually take a trip into town. The city boasts of expensive vintage and retro boutiques.



Out in Healesville where food and coffee are paramount, fashion is pretty much non-existent. The look and feel of Healesville is classic country, with its cream buildings and oak lined streets. The cafes of the area have slipped effortlessly into the image and so too have the many gift shops.

But what was missing from the scene was a decent vintage boutique where one can dream of a Mad Men style wardrobe. Recently the wish was answered and The Gilded Lily opened its doors.



Vintage is the new black and not only is it beautiful, nostalgic and highly on trend thanks to the likes of Mad Men, it is also sustainable and promotes recycling. The clothing at The Gilded Lily is genuine vintage and imported from Europe. Genuine vintage is recycled and for a piece of clothing to be classified as "vintage" it needs to be 20 years or older, meaning most pieces have come from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. All the pieces have been selected for quality and their uniqueness; there is a range of styles, sizes and prices to suit every one.

The Gilded Lily in Healesville not only has wonderful one off pieces of vintage fashion, they also provide an art space and serve organic fair trade coffee.



The morning sun spills out onto the path where tables shaded by umbrellas await the customers. There are also small tables inside to enjoy your coffee, browse through a photography book and enjoy the atmosphere. Their coffee is proudly sustainable and fair trade sourced so you have another reason to enjoy your coffee, not that you need one. Their range of fresh artisan style pastries and cakes make a delicious treat.



In a further bid to promote the community, The Gilded Lily is emptied entirely once a month and is re arranged into an art exhibition. For a special night one lucky artist can display their art and promote themselves in a fun filled evening. The exhibition nights are free to attend and there are nibbles and local wines to try. The night is supported by local businesses and many locals join the festivities.
