Do you have a burning desire to create but don't have the software or hardware necessary to make your dream a reality? Then you need The Edge.
The Edge is an initiative from the
State Library of Queensland that provides residents with free access to technical and digital culture facilities. This new section of the library provides visitors with a range of digital media facilities, as well as workshops, group projects and forums in which to participate. Also available are meeting spaces and a support staff who have been picked due to their real world experience.
Programs at The Edge focus on nine different fields – noise, screen, writing, journalism, fuse, fabric and sense. Engage in experiments, learn a new skill, check out robot wars and loads more in a variety or classes and lectures that are also provided at no cost.
Facilities at The Edge include:
Wireless internet,
An auditorium equipped with high definition projector, projection wall and digital audio core,
11 window bays with LCD monitors,
A laboratory focusing on sound, video, gamin and animation production,
A laboratory geared towards electronic workshops, engineering and mobile and web applications, and
A laboratory with a complete recording studio.
There is also a coffee shop onsite.
The Edge was designed to improve education for young adults and is geared towards those aged sixteen to twenty five but is open to anyone with a need for digital media. It is open daily from 12.00pm until 6.00pm, except for programs and events held outside of those hours.
