If anyone has ever travelled through Europe as a student, off their own steam, and for an extended period of time, then they know the importance of cutting costs. You'll share a room with 15 other strangers, one with particularly smelly socks, you'll drink €2 bottles of wine, you'll only go to one museum per town and make up the cultural experience by talking to the locals. Most cost saving, you'll only eat cheap food.



Luckily in Europe cheap food is still good food. A bread stick from the bakery, a couple of slices of cured meat, cheese, a jar of olives and a park bench and you have a meal that cost you less that €10.

Up until recently this was something that was not even conceivable in Australia. Good bread, cheese, ham and olives, all in one place was impossible without a shopping centre, and then you'd have to go home to eat, but then you might as well cook something. That is until I found in Erskineville.

The name of the shop says it all. This place contains all the beautiful, flavourful Mediterranean ingredients that you need to complete an ad hoc picnic lunch, including a patch of grass just a couple of metres down the road. The food is slightly pricer than other Deli's (say the one at Woolies) but it's worth every penny.

This is a great, relaxed weekend activity, not only because I can guarantee you that the food will be good, but also because it means that you can sit down with your family or friends for hours after eating, waiting for the food to digest, watching the colourful inhabitants of Erskineville live their lives around you.

If you live far away from Erskineville? No, problem. The best thing about this weekend activity is that it takes no more planning than finding a Deli that has a nice patch of grass nearby. It's simple and it's delicious.
