I was looking for a quick weekend getaway that was affordable, pet-friendly and available at short notice. I found the Crab Shack at Port Parham, a small beach-side town just off the Port Wakefield Road, north of Adelaide.

Port Parham is known for its crab fishing but I planned to just kick back and relax for a couple of days. Because the rates were so affordable, my expectations weren't high but I was more than pleasantly surprised by this lovely little hideaway.

The shack – more like a house – overlooks the beach and even has a roof deck with a view along the coast. The décor and furnishings are good quality and there is a doggy-door and large enclosed back yard that kept my small dog happy and safe.

The shack offers accommodation for six people with two generous bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen, laundry and bathroom.

Proprietors, Karl and Jill were a pleasure to deal with and although they apologised that the cleaners had not had a chance to go through yet, the facilities were clean and tidy.

I walked along the beach, relaxed in the backyard, read, wrote, listened to music and took photos of the sunsets. At night I lazed on a recliner in the living room and watched the large TV. The shower was lovely, the bed was comfortable and the air conditioners kept the whole place cool on an otherwise uncomfortably hot day.

The only minor fault I found with the shack was that a couple of the windows had no coverings but this will soon be rectified. Otherwise this was a perfect getaway.
