The MacArthur Museum Brisbane is in the heritage listed MacArthur Chambers building constructed between 1931 and 1934 as the Queensland Headquarters of the Australian Mutual Provident Society.

Because of the CBD location, on the corner of Edward and Queen Streets, and its reinforced concrete roof, the building was used ideally, as the headquarters of the Allied Forces in the South-West Pacific during the Second World War. The cultural heritage significance of the building is partly based on this significant role in Australian and Queensland history. The significance of the building has continued to be acknowledged, for one instance in the fifty years' commemoration of World War II in November 1995.

The exhibitions are designed to encourage people to discover and engage with the poignant cultural heritage of wartime Brisbane, which are free to share stories of their own from the time..

This is one of those places I've always meant to visit since I moved to Brisbane. I'm now moving it up the list, thanks to your informative review.

de nada - It is a gem for sure. Literally 'steeped' in historic significance, specifically for Brisbane and her residents.

There really are few people today, who are actually aware of just how close the war came to Brisbane. What with the 'Brisbane Line' and all.
