Welcome to the Secret List. A list of fun, different and unusual things to do with your kids in Perth each month. There is something for every family, no matter how old your kids are, where you live, and how much you have to spend.

Why is it a secret? Because if you kids find out about all the things on this list: they will beg you to do everything on it.

Homegrown Festival
The Homegrown Festival is hosted by the City of Gosnells and is so big it needs four weeks to cover all the events. There are free craft sessions, play days in the park (March 3), a cushion concert (March 4) and a Community Day (Match 4), Messy Play Days (March 8), a Dads and Kids Disco (March 10), scooter/skating Clinics, Sound Labs, a pool party (March 12) and the festival finishes with the wonderful cultural diversity of Little Scribblers Festival (March 18).

Sculpture by the Sea
Now in its 13th year, the iconic Sculpture by the Sea on the sandy white shores of Cottesloe beach is back for the month of March. Drawing enormous crowds across its two week run, it has become famous for controversial and unique art, all of which is available for sale after the event (if you have a spare few thousand dollars or more). Weekends are usually chockers, but bring the kids along in the evenings for a fun picnic with some unusual dinner companions. Check the website for details about the free shuttle bus to help you get between the train station and the beach.

Fireworks and Families at Point Walter
What better way to enjoy the long weekend than with a free family concert at beautiful Point Walter. With four hours of free music and entertainment including the Freedom Fairies, plus a host of kids' activities (bouncy castle, face painting, balloon twisting) all finishing with a bang (fireworks) this is a great start to March. Free parking and free bus shuttles (check the website).

Hyde Park Community Fair
The long weekend in March means one of Perth's favourite festivals – the two day celebrations at the Hyde Park Community Fair. This enormously popular event has a range of activities each day including food stalls, arts and crafts, market stalls, wine, gardening exhibits, side show and show bags, rides, face painting, workshops, and more entertainment than you could hope for.

Entry to the fair is free and there is always a huge area dedicated to kids with a range of interesting activities. Parking can be tricky so consider public transport to get there and home again.

When: Sunday 5th and Monday 6th March from 9am

Cambridge Street Festival
This popular community festival is a family-friendly event with the main road in Wembley being closed off to allow pop-up market stalls, children's rides and activities, street theatre, music and performances and more.

When: Saturday 11th March, from 3pm to 8pm
Where: Cambridge Street between Simper Street and Jersey Street, Wembley

Carine Community Fair 2017
The Carine Community Fair is a huge local event with plenty of fun and ffree activities for kids and adults alike. There will be market stalls, petting zoo, sports clinics, chocolate wheel, sideshow alley with rides and showbags, plus plenty of free entertainment and food to buy. The fair has FREE entry but visitors are encouraged to donate generously to Rotary's worthy cause.

When: Sunday 12th March from 10am to 4pm

Teddy Bears Picnic at the Zoo
Grab your favourite teddy (and your bathers) and head to the zoo for everyone's favourite Teddy Bears Picnic. Raising awareness for threatened species such as the Sun Bear, this fun event will have plenty of activities including live stage shows, storytelling, bubbles, inflatables, a water slide, face and body art, mermaids and a wild zone with water activities. Best of all are the reduced entry prices for kids and a whole day to explore the zoo.

When: Sunday 12th March from 9am to 4pm
Where: Perth Zoo, South Perth
Cost: normal entry fees for adults, but kids under 4 are free and kids between 4 and 15 are only $2

Splashfest
You won't have to drag the kids to Splashfest, they'll be running out to the door to the annual water-based event in Swanbourne. With a raft of wet activities you'll be dripping with excitement at the slip'n'slides, Ninja obstacle course, pirate ship, water rollers and much more. There will be plenty to keep you amused if you prefer to stay dry as well as well as community stalls and plenty of food options.

St Patrick's Day Festival Parade and Family Fun Day
Go green and bring the family for the St. Patrick's Festival WA Parade and Family Fun Day in Leederville. Starting with a parade at 10am, there will also be pre-Parade entertainment and afterwards head to Medibank Stadium for a Family Fun Day with an huge list of kids entertainment and activities include an animal farm, zorb ball, Magicians, foam and bubbles, arts and crafts, and obstacle course and chill out zone. Parents will enjoy the traditional Irish football and hurling plus market and craft stalls, and plenty of live entertainment on the Main Stage.

Astrofest
If you have a little astrophysicist in the family then take them along to Astrofest, an astronomically awesome event dedicated to the stars and beyond. Bring a picnic and be prepared to turn your gaze skyward with a host of activities including solar gazing, models, guided tours, guest speakers, astrophotography and plenty of hands on activities. There are prizes to be won, and who knows, you might discover a new star.

When: Saturday 18th March, 5.30pm-9.30pm

World Biggest Playgroup Day
Every year Playgroup WA put on a big bash, rewarding its members and introducing itself to a new generation of families. This year, with a Dinosaur theme there will be plenty of free activities and events for kids and parents such as petting zoo, bouncy castles, water play, messy play, food and ice-cream trucks. You don't even have to be a Playgroup member to enjoy the fun.
