I have often felt the Gold Coast was slightly lacking in great places to eat and drink that were overlooking the beach.  For the most part, with the exception of the surf clubs, the majority of restaurants, cafes and bars are road side and usually a block away from that free wonderful view on offer.

So to find somewhere which is directly opposite the beach such as, the aptly named, Beach Cafe in Surfers Paradise is a treat.  I am unsure how long they have been open but I believe it must be new for this year, as the few places along that strip have a very new feel to them.

They offer a pretty extensive menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, cakes, coffees and alcoholic beverages.  Everything really, and they are open from 6:30am till late so whatever time you fancy some shade and a bite to eat or drink, they will be ready to serve.

Located on the promenade in Surfers Paradise underneath the Soul Complex, it is just around the corner from the main Cavil Avenue Mall, which I find overcrowded and a little on the tacky side. is far enough from the crowds but not so far away there is no atmosphere or life.

I have had breakfast, lunch and coffee here and I am always pleased with what I order - good prices, great food, a massive range to suit everyone and good service. Plus the views of the beach will never get old, there is a road in between, but hey, nothing is perfect.

They have happy hour daily from 3-6 pm where wine and beer is just $5 and sharing tapas plates are just $4-7.  Perfect for a few drinks and food before a big night out, or if you have spent the day at the beach and need to cool down and refuel.

The decor, as you would expect is beachy, with surfboards on the walls, beach furniture and surf images. It has a real light and breezy aesthetic, and still has then a new fresh feel about it.

The service is good, you just order at the counter and get a number - I do prefer table service - but this seems to be the way on the Gold Coast.  I have never had to wait too long for food or drinks even when really busy, and the staff are always friendly and welcoming.

Prices are pretty good too, not overly priced at all. You can get bacon, eggs, tomato and toast for $13.75, pizza from $9.50, caesar salad is $16.50 and a club sandwich is $14.50.

They also have a cocktail menu too and a variety of yummy cakes on offer, so if you fancy a bit of real indulgence then what better place to do it, than overlooking the beach?

It has certainly become one of my favourite places to visit, worth it just for the views alone, but the food and service are great, too. Check them out on Facebook for updates, offers and more information.
