The Avengers – Film Review

Australian Release Date: April 25th 2012

Bold, passionate, breathtaking and nerdgasmic. The Avengers is a thrilling rush of Marvel action packed with intriguing characters, smart screenplay, humour and a lovely script.

In this much-hyped superhero flick from Joss Whedon, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) attempts to recruit a special forces team with the likes of Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to save the world and take down eccentric demigod, Loki (Tom Hiddlestone).

2012 is being touted with as a massive year for films, The Avengers simply the first of many huge-budgeted, heavily anticipated films. But, boy. This film sets that bar pretty high for its competition.

The best thing about The Avengers is that the action isn't the only thing good about the film, like many superhero or comic adaption films in the past.

In saying that though, the action scenes are nothing more than epic. Particularly a well thought out and executed battle royale on S.H.I.E.L.D's sky airship. Intense fight scenes between Hulk and Thor worth admission alone.

But I'm not going to describe it to you. It's simply something you have to experience firsthand; nothing else can do it justice.

The plot was also impressive; we've often seen films get lazy with it when there is this much action involved. There are some minor potholes here and there, but overall it's quite enjoyable and the two hours and twenty minutes of running time does it justice.

One of the major doubts for many fans and media alike was the addition of Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk. But it wouldn't be wrong to say that he is one of, if not the standout amongst the cast. His calm and relaxed depiction of the Bruce Banner is a fresh perspective delivered with poise – don't be surprised to see him get his own film on the Hulk in due course. He was that good.

Likewise was the similarly underrated Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner. From the pre-release hype, it seemed he was there just to fill space. But not since Legolas in LOTR has an archer looked so badass.

But arguably what sets The Avengers apart from the competition is the quirky humour. Each character seems to have their own laughable moments and it doesn't make the dialogue or acting look awkward. It also fits into the script perfectly and brings some of the 'fun' back into being a superhero.

However, one thing Whedon and his team took seriously was the CGI. With more explosions than a Michael Bay orgasm, the graphics are crisp and clean. None more so than the insanely awesome Bruce Banner-to-Hulk transformation.

On the negative side, they could have been a little more creative with the final battle. Manhattan can be blown up so many times without it becoming slightly redundant.

For the fellas, Scarlett Johansson adds some sexual appeal while Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans are just the tip of the ice berg for the ladies.

The 3D aspect wasn't anything too special again, it's more exciting to a degree but you're not going to miss much by seeing it in 2D.

I dare say this will be the start of a wonderful series of 'Avenger' films over the next decade or two. So stop reading this review and get out to the cinemas.

Rating: 9/10

See It If: You're a self confessed comic-geek or simply love jaw-dropping action.

Don't See It If: You have a poor attention span.
