The Art of Chess at UQ Art Museum

Published April 3rd 2011

If you believe that the game of chess is a fine art, you're not alone.

The Art of Chess is a travelling exhibition from RS&A Ltd in London. The king's game is given a whimsical makeover in a show that includes submission from some of the world's most renowned contemporary artists; Maurizio Cattelan, Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst are some of the featured designers.

The show displays more than a dozen custom designed chess boards. Each creation is unique – Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama presents a pumpkin shaped chess board made from leather and timber while American Barbara Kruger's inclusion is a sleek and modern piece of electronica.

In Your Move: Australian artists play chess, thirteen Australian artists were commissioned to create their own examples. Exhibits include a landscaped garden and a picnic table with beer bottle chess pieces.

The Art of Chess will show at the University of Queensland Art Museum (James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre, University Drive, UQ St Lucia) until 24 April. The museum is open daily from 10.00am until 4.00pm and entry is free.
