If you believe that the game of chess is a fine art, you're not alone.
The Art of Chess is a travelling exhibition from
RS&A Ltd in London. The king's game is given a whimsical makeover in a show that includes submission from some of the world's most renowned contemporary artists;
Maurizio Cattelan,
Tracey Emin and
Damien Hirst are some of the featured designers.
The show displays more than a dozen custom designed chess boards. Each creation is unique – Japanese artist
Yayoi Kusama presents a pumpkin shaped chess board made from leather and timber while American
Barbara Kruger's inclusion is a sleek and modern piece of electronica.
In
Your Move: Australian artists play chess, thirteen Australian artists were commissioned to create their own examples. Exhibits include a landscaped garden and a picnic table with beer bottle chess pieces.
The Art of Chess will show at the
University of Queensland Art Museum (
James and Mary Emelia Mayne Centre, University Drive, UQ St Lucia) until 24 April. The museum is open daily from 10.00am until 4.00pm and entry is free.
