The Anglers Tavern is a staple to many Moonee Valley residents. Perched on the edge of the Maribrynong River, this local bistro and bar provides great food at a reasonable price, and an even better view.
The Anglers has a bit of something for everyone. Families can enjoy a nice meal while kids can entertain themselves in the fun-filled playroom; there is also a TAB featured inside the building. The menu features up-market meals mixed with old pub favourites. There is always a variety of daily specials available as well. The Oyster Bar caters to those wanting to enjoy fresh seafood. However, it is the beer garden that is the main attraction.
The perfect way to experience the 'Anglers', as it is simply known to locals, is to visit the garden on a lazy Sunday Summers afternoon. Located on the perimeter of the building it provides an intimate view of the River encased by the local shrubbery that is not to be turned down. The live band and DJ that features there on the weekends draws in the younger crowd and the occasional sports star. To ensure yourself a seat in the garden you have to get in early because it gets extremely busy during the summer. The garden is the perfect location to catch up with friends in a relaxed environment while enjoying a cold drink. It can also be enjoyed in winter when heaters allow you to comfortably sit outside and unwind.
Last Sunday a large group of friends and I visited the Tavern. We were treated to exceptional service, which is not often received in large groups, and a brilliant view. The beers were ice cold and the parma's (Anglers Chicken Parma) had the perfect ration of cheese-sauce-chicken-chips-salad. Depending on what you get, it can be a bit pricey (The parma itself was $21.90), but all-in-all I would definitely recommend The Angler's for a hearty meal in good company!
The Anglers is one of the ultimate ways to unwind on balmy Sunday afternoon where the early evening breeze provides the perfect respite from the often unpredictable Melbourne weather.
All in all, it is a warm and friendly setting that caters to all. It is open seven days a week and is easily accessible by public transport, which means that there's no reason not to venture down to this local establishment.
