Thai Pothong is a traditional and popular Thai restaurant, located in the suburb of Newtown, 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD. Thai Pothong has been voted the Best Thai Restaurant in Sydney for four years in a row now, and its popularity and admirers continue to grow. The restaurant is easy to get to, as it is located only 50 metres from Newtown Station.
Thai Pothong is unique because it has a gift shop attached to the restaurant containing beautiful handcrafted items from Thailand. What is also unique is that when diners pay their bill in cash, they receive a 10% refund on the entire bill which is given in Thai Pothong Dollars to spend in the gift shop. When you pay your bill by credit card you can receive a 5% refund on your entire bill. Every Thai Pothong Dollar is equivalent to an Australian Dollar, therefore you are guaranteed a bargain.
The Restaurant is BYO, however if you choose not to bring your own wine there is a wide selection of wines available from the menu, all of which are under $20.00.
Thai Pothong claims that the food "combines the best of several Eastern cuisines", including Szechuan Chinese, Malaysian, Southern India and Arabian food. The restaurant provides a wide range of seafood dishes, vegetarian dishes, entrees, curries, gluten free options and stir-fried dishes. Some of the well-loved dishes include Pineapple Fried Rice, the Red Duck Curry and the Minced Crab Meat and Chicken in Bean Curd Skin Parcels.
It is recommended that you make a reservation in advance, as the restaurant is extremely popular and usually fills up quite quickly most days of the week.
