Taste of Shanghai Restaurant, Hurstville

Maybe it was the bright lights and its siren red sign - but, something called out to me when my friend and I were searching for a dinner location this evening. That something was
Taste of Shanghai .
Walking in, I decided that this was the place - whether the menu had lots of meat dishes or not (it did). As eye-catching as it was on the outside, Taste of Shanghai definitely kept up its decor standards on the inside with wall sized pictures of its delicacies, exposed brick and canvases of Chinese writing and pictures. I can't say I'm an expert on anything about Chinese culture - but there was definitely something of a homely-local-town-vibe about the restaurant.
The menu did not disappoint either. Starting with selections of entrees, it continued to dumplings, fish, poultry, beef, pork, rice dishes, hotpot, noodles, and dessert - especially the 'Deep fried Chinese milk dough' which my friend and I sat eyeing for an admittedly long time.
Eventually I settled for the 'Stir-fried chilli chicken' whilst my friend ordered 'vegetable dumplings'. Yum yum! Whilst we waited for our food, we sipped on hot tea, and made chit-chat whilst soaking in the bright and busy atmosphere of the restaurant.
In less in 15 minutes, our dishes were served. My chicken dish was tender and well-flavoured - with just enough chilli oil. Although I could have done with some more capsicum, it was nonetheless as delicious as it looked! My friend let my try her dumplings. Unlike other places which seem to soak their dumplings in oil - these were steamed perfectly without the huge servings of oil alongside. I must say I was happy with how it turned out!
Last words - coming back for Shanghai seconds!
