While most of South Australia's cultural hub is centred around North Terrace, if you step away from the main drag and head to nearby Grenfell Street you'll find the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute . This is the oldest Aboriginal owned and run cultural centre in Australia.

The cultural centre has a good display of Aboriginal art. Not just traditional art, but a whole range of art styles that all aim to show the diversity of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. It opens up these cultures to people who may not be as aware of them, and shows these cultures living vibrantly in contemporary society. The arts have always been an important part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and the way they are integrated with their culture and life is shown in the cultural centre.

Exhibits range from photography, to painting, to mixed media, and all show unique cultural aspects and have their own stories to tell. Exhibitions like 'We are the Young Woman of this Land' using photography to tell Aboriginal women's stories, and Peter Sharock's interesting mixed media collection 'Believe' all show a different picture. Chat to staff to learn more about any current exhibitions, or grab one of the helpful leaflets in many languages to help make your way through the galleries. From times there are special activities for children to get them involved in the exhibitions. For more information on exhibitions then book a Tandanya tour .

If you're a fan of any of the art work on show you can take some home with you, most of the art on display is available for sale. This can be a great opportunity to get your hands on a unique piece of art work. Prices for available pieces are on display around the gallery, so you will know what sort of price you can expect to pay.

Every Tuesday to Sunday you can witness a cultural performance, starting at midday. You'll only pay a small fee of $5 per adults and $3 per child or concession to witness the traditional performances. If you do book a tour then you will also be able to witness the performance. It is just another way to experience this rich culture.

Don't just stick to the usual spots on North Terrace, head to Tandanya for an interesting artistic exhibition. Bring a long the kids and they'll learn a thing or two as well.
