Take a walk up Burnett Lane the next time you are in the city and discover interesting artworks along the historic laneway. This impressive piece by local artist Simon Suckling is entitled
"The Green Wall" and is printed on perforated vinyl mesh.
Imprinted in the tar of this laneway is a cinnamon/luminescent lime plant motif design street print by Elizabeth Woods. The work pays tribute to the lane namesake, surveyor Charles Burnett.
Using text work and painted scripts on a plastered wall and roll-up garage door, visual artist Natalie Billing has highlighted facets of Burnett's life. Burnett died
"debilitated" at the age of 39, the result of
"an enthusiastic and almost reckless devotion to the trying duties of his profession," according to the Moreton Bay Courier of 1854.
If you are looking for a police car in the city, chances are you will find one parked in the lane. Other, more exotic vehicles can also be found in this space, such as this beautifully restored, mint green, white-topped Falcon.
Once trialled as a lunchtime market space, the narrow space of Burnett Lane makes for a short and interesting walk behind the bustle of Queen Street.
