On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, between the 20th of October and the 16th of December,
public Tai Chi sessions will be occurring in the city.
It is well known that the ancient Chinese have
numerous worthy inventions to their credit, the most famous being china and Chinese food. They were also responsible for devising
Tai Chi, a martial art that is today widely practiced as a
spiritual pursuit. At the risk of alienating wannabe
Jet Lis, it is this sedate, westernised version that readers can expect to encounter.
What are the benefits of Tai Chi? There are many, including reduced stress, and greater balance, flexibility and concentration. Another is improved fitness- according to
Dr Wikipedia, a spot of Tai Chi will burn more calories than surfing. And, of course, there is that ultimate benefit, the one that most websites would be too spineless to report- namely, a feeling of immense self-satisfaction bordering on smugness. Anybody wearing lycra and/or a leotard will be in it solely for that reason.
Sessions will definitely be occurring at these two locations:
Where: Ward Park, Devonshire St, Surry Hills (meet at Northcott Community Centre)
When: Every Tuesday, from the 20th of October to the 15th of December
Time: 9.30-10.30am

and
Where: Redfern Park, Corner of Redfern and Chalmers Streets, Redfern
When: Every Wednesday, from the 21st of October to the 16th of December
Time: 11am to 12pm

It is also likely (though not certain) that a third site will be used:
Where: Turruwul Park, Corner of Rothschild Ave & Hayes Rd, Rosebery (meet at the kiosk/BBQ area)
When: Every Wednesday, from the 4th of November to the 16th of December
Time: 9.30-10.30am

If you'd like to confirm that third site – or ask any other questions – you can send an email to agedworker@cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au, or phone 9265-9489 (asking for Jeff or Jess). And don't be put off by the email address- although seniors are going to be involved, this is an event for everyone.
Finally, don't forget to dress comfortably, bring water and protect yourself from the sun.
