One of my favourite memories of Christmas time as a kid was looking at Christmas lights. The whole family would pack into the car on a balmy December evening and head to the usual hotspots around town, stopping to "ooh" and "aah" at all the garishly decorated homes. With school finishing up for the year and the big day just around the corner, my brother, sister and I would be more excited than Tom Cruise on Oprah's couch.

So with Christmas fast approaching, I thought it would be a good idea to get tips from Weekend Notes readers on where to find Sydney's best Christmas lights. What street do you visit to see the best lights Sydney has to offer?
Christmas Lights 2
Even people living in units and apartments can get into the spirit.

Some suburbs and streets have spent years building a reputation for their blazingly bright displays, and you can see a list of some great areas to visit here.

Around where I live in North Ryde, streets like Chauvel Street and Cutler Parade usually put on a good show, and I'm hoping that'll be the same this year.

But I'm sure plenty of you know of one or two great Christmas light locations around Sydney, so why not share them with the rest of us?

Pleasant avenue in Erskineville is great - lots of alternative and interesting designs plus the usual lights. Lots of recycled materials. It is fun and great for the kids to see...Difficult to drive down as it is a narrow street but do walk down and chat to the very friendly local folk who are often out on the street sharing a drink or a coffee

This year 2011, the Sydney St. Hornsby Hts, NSW 2077 will be transformed into a Christmas light spectacular for all of Sydney to experience. Lights will feature 50 displays, 300 LED Light characters- over 1,000,000 points of light.
In 2010, the Sydney St. Hornsby Hts, residents allowed the public to drive their own vehicles inside the area to experience this unique Christmas wonderland in a spectacular light and sound show

Livingstone Place in Mount Colah have been going strong for years!
Gets very busy with cars so best to park in surroundings and leisurely walk around the culdesac. We visit here and Sydney Road, Hornsby Hts every year!

Stephen Avenue in Ryde also does a good street of decorations.

There is a really great home in Kens Road, Frenchs Forest, which does their entire garden in lights, plus has a village inside as well. They computerise their lights to music, which you can listen to on your FM radio!

Out past the Davidson Fire Brigade, I think it is Borgnis Street which also has a street full of lights. They collect for charity as well.

Second Street in Ashbury has a fantastic display of Christmas lights. 80% of the houses on the street have a Christmas light display. There are usually a lot of people driving and walking around so best to park a block away and have a walk around the street.

Chauvel and Cutler Streets in North Ryde are also awesome. I liked this street a little more over the one in Ashbury purely due to the artist window displays and the effort put into some of the garden displays.

Definitely worth taking the drive one night to check them out. Fun for everyone in the family.
