From the 18th to the 21st of June,
St Mary’s Cathedral will play host to the Sydney Winter Festival.
As the
website explains, Sydneysiders will be able to enjoy “the first outdoor ice rink in the CBD since 1959”. Furthermore:
"The festival will recreate the magic of alpine winter celebrations with food stalls offering a variety of culinary delights from across the globe. Keep warm with delicious mulled wine and roast chestnuts available as you watch a diverse range of entertainment and snow sports on the giant cinema screen. An adorable petting zoo full of cute fluffy things makes for hours of entertainment for adults and kids alike. This festival offers a unique environment for mingling with friends and family. Entry is free of charge."
One of the festival’s signature events will be an
outdoor sculpture exhibition, based on the theme ‘Enlightened Sydney Winter’. Judging will be done by visitors, through SMS and email voting.
Another important part of proceedings will be the giant screen, which will be:
"…showing of the Viennese New Year’s Concert, the world famous Hahnenkamm Downhill Race from Kitzbuhel or thrilling snowboarding action. Alternatively, enjoy a heart warming romantic winter movie with your sweetheart while snuggled up in a Winter Festival blanket."
As well, guests can try their hand at throwing a
curling stone, go downhill racing in a ski simulator, or simply browse the selection of winter apparel.
While movies and concerts are free, the ice skating is not. It is advisable to book online, as sessions are expected to sell out quickly. Visitors should also be aware that food and drinks are not permitted to be brought into the venue. Finally, under-18s will not be admitted unless accompanied by an adult.
