When we went to it was the hottest day on record. And they should know, since it is at that they measure the temperature. Set up on a hill overlooking the harbour, and in a park that is full of beautiful old Morton Bay Figs, the observatory is one of Sydney's most delightful attractions. Small it may be, but packed with information, excursions and activities for kids and adults alike, and it's not all related to the stars.

The kids participated in a simulated archaeological dig (run during school holidays) and explored the history of Port Phillip while I wandered around the museum and learned about the role the played in the navigation of ships of old. Afterwards, we visited the cosy planetarium and experienced the recreation of the night sky. Fascinatingly told, the presenter had the undivided attention of my two small kids. As part of this we also got to view Venus and the Sun through special telescopes.

In between events the kids had a ball in the lego room, where thousands of pieces of lego were waiting to be built into new spaceships and galactic cruisers by my mini-engineers.

The museum also runs night time events for those who wish to gaze upon the starry skies and courses for those who wish to increase their knowledge about astronomy. Fun, educational and historic. A great day (or night) out.
