Carriageworks, the country's largest and most significant contemporary multi-arts centre of its kind is hosting the work of Zhang Huan, one of China's most daring artists (according to the New York Times).

In line with the centre's engagement of artists and audiences with contemporary ideas and issues, this internationally renowned artist is examining contemporary life through traditions and rituals central to Buddhist, Chinese and Tibetan histories.

Zhang Huan's Sydney Buddha is over 5 metres tall and made of 20 tonnes of incense ash. As the sculpture may be destroyed over time, it draws the viewer's attention to the brevity of life and the cycles of renewal and destruction. Entry is FREE.
