This summer
Sydney Festival brings to you a splendid construction of 20 tonnes of incense ash in the form of Sydney Buddha.
Set by a group of 12 people over 5 days, this towering structure over 5 metres in height was conceptualised by internationally renowned artist Zhang Huan.
A staunch Buddhist himself, Zhang Huan brings together incense ash from Buddhist temples in Shanghai and other provinces in China to construct this piece. This is one of many ash structure displays that Zhang Huan has created in the past. The
Ash Head no.1 being a prominent one.
The ash Buddha and the aluminum cast that it was made within sit facing each other. A test of time for the ash structure as it starts to disintegrate where as the aluminum cast sits tall throughout. As the ash degrades it gives prominence and thought to the element of time, changing the experience of the exhibition from one day to another.
Watch the informative video of how this was brought to life.
