Surfing is a sport that dates back to the ancient Polynesian culture. It was introduced to Australians by Hawaiiain surfer Duke Kahanamoku in 1915. If you've ever wanted to know more about this exciting water sport, there's only one place to go.
Surf World (
1st Floor Honeyworld, 35 Tomewin Street, Currumbin), located across the road from
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, is Queensland's first surf museum. This venue is dedicated to the history, the legends and the people related to the sport of surfing.
Surf World is home to surfing memorabilia from nearly one hundred years of surfing, plus movies, newsreels, photos and artwork. Exhibits include a retrospective of surfboards, including boards autographed by world champions
Mick Fanning and
Stephanie Gilmore and a rare solid timber Hawaiian board from the 1910's.
This location is the host of frequent talks and events related to the surf world. There are opportunities to meet some of surfing's greats, forums for fans of particular aspects of surfing and regular swap meets.
Surf World also offers guided tours of the museum for school groups. They are conducted from Monday to Friday between 10.00am and 3.00pm and last about one and a half hours. The cost is $4.00 per students, with a group capacity of thirty students. Admission is free for one adult for every ten students.
Surf World is open from 10.00am until 5.00pm daily. Admission is $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children and concession holders.
