ANZAC Day brings back mixed memories and emotions, but this year locals have taken a small step to bring the community closer together.
The
Sunnybank RSL club is the first Australian branch to dedicate a war memorial to Australian servicemen of Chinese descent. This special recognition is both a reminder and a tribute to those who have served in the Army since 1899. Many in the past have been prevented from entering the war effort due to various laws and policies, which have now been overturned in an effort to strengthen cultural ties.
There has been some positive feedback from Chinese war veterans who have since visited the newly constructed war memorial. The Australian soldiers of Asian descent feel appreciated and realise that this tribute means a lot to them – especially since it recognises their dedication and service.
One such story belongs to Jesse Chan, a man whose dream was to serve in the Australian army. As soon as he was old enough, he applied for the army reserve unit but later learned that his application was rejected because of political issues. Mr. Chee was eventually accepted into the army years later. Now, more than forty years later, he is grateful that finally he, and others like him, are finally being recongised for their efforts and service.
This type of memorial is the first of its kind in Australia to specifically highlight and honor the commitment of these special Australian soldiers, who have persevered despite all odds to make an impact for the future generations of Australia.
This newly constructed war memorial will be on display during ANZAC Day, so the public will be able to admire this special monument to our 'unsung heroes', who, although have come from different backgrounds, still have played an important part in the history of our nation.
