There aren’t too many ‘real’ hidden little gems remaining in the live music arena of our beautiful city. Many of these gems come with an area code of St Kilda, Brunswick or Prahran and as such, seem to be dominated by a trendy and ridiculously well dressed Gen Y posse.
Until now…
Gospel Sunday Sessions having taken up residency at a lovely, understated upstairs bar area in the middle of Yarraville,
Aqua e Vino that is well equipped for a lazy Sunday of great wine and unbelievably good gospel music.
The bar itself offers a great wine selection, award winning (and pricey) cocktail selection as well as food and bar snacks. The décor is relaxed with large chesterfield sofa’s nestling bay windows and quirky artwork donning the opposing walls.
The sounds you can expect to hear, as the name suggests, are full blown uplifting gospel with a James Brown, rhythm and blues backing that hits you in the face sending shivers up and down your spine. The voices on the three lead singer’s rival that of any you will hear in Melbourne and the four piece band create a sound barley contained within the walls of this fine establishment. Music can be heard from the relaxed, slow moving main street and as you enter through the large staircase, you are greeted by a plethora of smiles from all ages and all backgrounds.
Gospel Sundays is a fantastic day out that will leave you feeling refreshed, cultured and truly lucky. My only warning would be that is quite loud so venturing for the appreciation of music and not conversation is recommended, it can also get quite warm up there once the music is in full swing and people start moving their feet so dress light and enjoy the amazing sounds!
Expect to pay a $10 entry fee which balanced out by a free drink card.
