The Brisbane Market Place at Rocklea is a fantastic place to visit on the weekend. Saturday the markets host the Saturday Fresh Market with amazing fresh produce straight from the farmers. However if you want to bag a bargain the Sunday Discovery Market is the one to visit.

The Discovery Market opens at 6am and runs till noon and entry costs $1 per person. Be sure to get there early as with over 5000 visitors many of the good items go quickly. You can find many weird and wonderful things among the 380 stalls. Almost everything you could think of from pet supplies, home wares, electrical supplies to clothing. Half of the fun of this market is browsing the stalls and wondering, who on earth would buy that?

Apart from the eclectic array of bric-a-brac this is a great place to buy plants at a fraction of the cost of a nursery, at the moment the bromeliads are in full bloom and just wonderful to see. You can also get great deals on palms and succulents. Try bartering if you can, if you buy several from the same stall holder they will usually give you a discount. Unfortunately this is something that I only remember after I have paid.

The markets also have a great food selection in the morning, making hard to decide what to have for breakfast. Fresh ground coffee with Dutch pancakes, bacon roll, Greek Yogurt or crepes? It's a tough choice, you may want to try a few. Sit back with your breakfast and listen to the entertainment with local singers and bands.

Just before you leave have a look at the fresh flower stall, again at a fraction of the price you pay at a florist. You can buy ready made bouquets or get the flowers in bunches and do your own arranging. The Sunday Discovery Markets are a great place to spend a relaxing morning. you don't even have to buy anything to enjoy it although getting a bargain always feels good.
