The smell of fresh bread, the sizzle of bacon frying and sun-drenched footpaths lead many of us to Brisbane's cafes and restaurants for Sunday brunch. With Brisbane's up and coming reputation as a gourmet haven, brunch is definitely worth getting out of bed for.

My picks for the best Sunday brunch in Brisbane kick off in Bulimba.

Unique stores and restaurants line Bulimba's leafy Oxford Street. Nestled on the Brisbane River, you can catch a ferry, walk from neighbouring Hawthorn or drive and follow the scent of coffee. The Riverbend Teahouse combines fresh ingredients served on a timber deck with an in-house bookstore to browse through at your leisure.

For a more energetic morning, Southbank's Grey Street is always popular, so arrive early to secure an outdoor table at Poppy's Basket Bakery and Deli, where you can eat granola with poached fruit among the bakery's loyal customers, or Star Bar Cafe for a spot of people watching with a Bloody Mary.

Restaurant's with names such as Rue de Paris Coffee Boutique and La Dolce Vita line Milton's Park Road, adding to the European vibe created by a mini replica Eiffel Tower. Park Road remains a favourite with the 'in' crowd, with books, home wares and shoe stores scattered in between the restaurants.

Brisbane, served sunny-side up, combines gourmet food with recreational activities close by to make the most of a lazy Sunday.
