Streat Food Carts

Published September 21st 2010
STREAT is a social enterprise aiming to provide employment and life skills to homeless young people. They run street cafes or carts in Melbourne that serve food prepared by the youth – providing them training and channelling a pathway to long-term careers in hospitality industry. They offer delicious and cost-effective food inspired by street hawker food from around the world.

It's an innovative and a noble initiative that can be supported by various methods. You can help by eating a meal at one of their street-based cafes/carts or purchasing STREAT's fair-trade and organic coffee. You can even donate money to support their trainee program, participate in the STOP homelessness campaign or volunteer to assist in various short-term projects with your time and expertise.

You can also promote their cause by wearing a T-shirt custom-printed to order; choose the colour, style and message/logo through Red Bubble. For information about other ways to help, click here.

STREAT estimates that a person has 80,000 meals in their lifetime, and by buying a meal from them, you can help towards eradicating homelessness off Melbourne's streets. They offer healthy, great tasting street food, prepared in hygienic conditions and you can even pre-order in case you want to grab a quick bite on the go.

They keep experimenting with various dishes and change their seasonal menu according to a theme or 'featured country' with support from many renowned chefs. Their carts are located opposite St Paul's Cathedral in Federation Square (corner of Swanston and Flinders streets) and operate Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.

You don't have to be a social activist to work for a cause. You can, in STREAT's words – help stop homelessness the delicious way.

Yes, they started operating it just as I'd completed my article. And agreed, the coffee is really good.
