St. Mary's Anglican Church Market Day

I'm a hopeless romantic - a total nostalgia buff who loves all that is quaint and quirky, evoking images, however illusory, of a romanticised past. Therefore, it's only natural that come spring time, I'm often kept busy flitting between the various fetes and fairs that seem to pop up like wildflowers in response to the warmer weather.


This Saturday, on September 7th, St Mary's Anglican Church in Maitland will be holding its Market Day. Although strictly speaking it's not an annual fete (the church holds market days every two months), it's sure to be a wonderful event: a chance to do some shopping while helping out a worthy local cause. Founded in 1838, St Mary's is one of Maitland's most historic churches. If you love local history and Maitland's beautiful colonial architecture, the market will also be a great opportunity to see inside this lovely old building.

[ADVERT]Compared to some of the Hunter Valley's larger markets the will be a relatively small affair, however, don't let this put you off. In this age of online shopping and large impersonal plazas, shopping the old-fashioned way, at a country market, is a relaxing and pleasurable experience. All the old market favourites will be there: a cake stall, a stall selling home-made jams and pickles, second-hand books, bric-a-brac, handicrafts (including delightful hand-knitted and crocheted baby garments made by the church ladies), and fresh produce.

For a nostalgic day out in the beautiful Hunter Valley and the chance to support one of Maitland's most historic churches, head for the St. Mary's Anglican Church Market Day next Saturday. The market will open around 8am and continue until around 3pm, although perhaps later. As well as helping out a good cause, you'll be sure to come home with a shopping basket full of all kinds of goodies.
