Square Mile is a free music festival in Adelaide with appeal for all ages. Now in its fourth year, Square Mile focuses particularly on the range of electronic music produced by local musicians.

This free music festival takes place this year on Saturday January 30 at leafy Pinky Flat on the banks of the River Torrens. Kicking off at 3pm there will be plenty of live music and entertainment, with free things to do for all the family until things wind to a close at 9pm. When I went to last year's event I was surprised by the contrast with many other music festivals - Square Mile had plenty of families with children enjoying the day, as well as a range of others cruising along to the music.

The was founded by Marina and Ben Lewis, who had fond memories of enjoying free live music in Adelaide during the 1990's. they wanted to create an event that is for everyone, no matter irrespective of age, gender, race, and beliefs. The festival aims to bring everyone together in a happy and relaxed outdoor environment, and with the help of Splash Adelaide their dream was born.

Square Mile keeps on becoming bigger and better each year, showcasing some of the best DJ's and live acts that Australia has to offer. Being 'Adelaide proud', every aspect of the event is South Australian sourced, including the featured artists.

This year's event features Adelaide DJ Late Nite Tuff Guy , creator of numerous internationally acclaimed DJ edits featuring artists including David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Chic, Diana Ross, Toto, Talking Heads and Jamiroquai. He'll make a special appearance as DJ HMC before embarking on another global tour. When DJ HMC plays records you can guarantee that no one can stand still! If you need one good reason why you should go to Square Mile, it is just to experience the boundless talent of this man just once in your lifetime.

Also on the menu at Square Mile is Damien Donato (aka DMZ), long established techno music pioneer and founder of Juice Records - Australia's first electronic music label. This rare appearance by DMZ will feature music never heard before in public, promising to invoke thought and dance in equal measures.

Back again to represent the next generation of Adelaide's electronic artists is Phil Rogers, otherwise known as Oddessa on Pilot Records . Phil is renown for producing music combining both African tribal rhythms, and the sounds one would expect of an interstellar life form - a unique combination that just has to be heard.

For the first time DJ Leo Gunn joins the artist line-up for Square Mile this year, playing music that has influenced his own work as well as sounds designed purely for dance. Leo is a well established Adelaide producer whose releases on the Deep Explorer record label are highly respected and sought after around the world. Be sure to come and see why ears beyond Adelaide love Leo Gunn.

Music won't be the only attraction at Square Mile in Adelaide. There will be plenty of fun things to do, and activities for kids of all ages. Try your hand at a game of bocce, play tennis on the lawns, or test your skill at quoits - all free things to do courtesy of Splash Adelaide. If you haven't brought your own picnic accessories then don't worry - there will ample picnic rugs, outdoor furniture and additional shade provided on the day.

You won't need to BYO food or drinks - Flamin' Wiener will be teasing your tastebuds with their delicious hot dogs, with a vegan special available too. Tacocat need no introduction with their terrific tacos, while the uniquely Aussie Bushtucker Icecream will be in demand - and not just by the kids.

The is licensed with adult drinks available. The Square Mile catering team will be selling Barossa Valley Brewing beer and The Barossa Valley Cider Company cider on tap, with soft drinks available too (sorry no BYO permitted).
