Square MILE is a community focused music festival in Adelaide with appeal for all ages. Now in its fifth year, the event focuses primarily on a range of electronic music produced by local musicians.

This year Square MILE will be held on Saturday, March 18th in Tarndanyangga/Victoria Square near the 'Three Rivers' fountain. Kicking off at 2pm there will be plenty of live music and entertainment, with free things to do for all the family until things wind to a close at 7pm. When I went to last year's event I was surprised by the contrast with many other music festivals - Square MILE had plenty of families with children enjoying the day, as well as a range of others cruising along to the music.

The festival was founded by Marina and Ben Lewis, who have fond memories of enjoying live music in Adelaide during the 1990's. Their aim for Square MILE is to give everyone a similar experience, regardless of age, gender, race, and beliefs. The festival aims to bring everyone together in a happy and relaxed outdoor environment and with the help of Adelaide City Council, the original concept of Square MILE continues to be realised.

Square MILE keeps on becoming bigger and better each year, showcasing some of the best DJ's and live acts that Australia has to offer. Being 'Adelaide proud', every aspect of the event is South Australian sourced, including the featured artists.

This year's event features Adelaide DJ HMC/Late Nite Tuff Guy, creator of numerous internationally acclaimed DJ edits featuring artists including David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Chic, Diana Ross, Toto, Talking Heads and Jamiroquai. Catch DJ HMC while you can as these days he spends more time wowing audiences abroad.

Also on the menu at Square MILE is Damien Donato (aka DMZ), long established techno music pioneer and founder of Juice Records - Australia's first electronic music label. This is a rare appearance by DMZ and will feature music never heard before in public, promising to invoke thought and dance in equal measures.

Additionally, both DJ HMC and DMZ are celebrating 25 years of making music together as their first record was released globally from Adelaide in 1992. These days this piece of vinyl is worth a small fortune among avid collectors, but you get to hear it for free at Square MILE. Expect something special this year to mark a quarter century of Juice Records.

Back again to represent the next generation of Adelaide's electronic artists is Phil Rogers, renown for producing music combining both African tribal rhythms, and the sounds one would expect of an interstellar life form - a unique combination that just has to be heard.

Phil is joined this year by Lenin, another young gun who repeatedly demonstrates his passion and ability for music every time he plays records. Lenin loves Square MILE so much that with the help of friends he created Inside Out, another regular outdoor music event that features local emerging artists.

Music won't be the only attraction at Square MILE in Tarndanyangga/Victoria Square. There will be plenty of fun things to do, and activities for kids of all ages. Try your hand at a game of bocce, totem tennis on the lawns, or test your skill at quoits - all free things to do courtesy of Adelaide City Council. If you haven't brought your own picnic accessories then don't worry - there will ample outdoor furniture and additional shade provided on the day.

You won't need to BYO food or drinks either. Tacocat need no introduction with their terrific tacos, while Madame Spice will be teasing your tastebuds with their locally sourced, health focused creations. For those young and old who have a sweet tooth, Locapops will also be there to provide ice cold treats.
Square MILE is licensed with Lobethal Bierhaus beer and The Barossa Valley Cider Company cider on tap, with soft drinks available too (sorry no BYO permitted).
