I think it's hard, as a non-Aboriginal, to fully understand the Aboriginal connection to country and spirituality. This was the intention of the first conducted by the late Aboriginal Elder Uncle Reg Blow in 2012.

This year everyone is invited to honour the memory of Uncle Reg and walk the with Reg's son Tony Blow.

The Aboriginal people have offered, as a goodwill gesture towards reconciliation, the
walk. The aim is to promote good health by improving emotional and spiritual well-being and to give a sense of connectedness – to the land, others and ourselves.

Having witnessed the recent Aboriginal dance at Federation Square I am preparing for another moving experience. Through their performance, songs and storytelling I learnt about the coming together of the five language groups of the Kulin people. The strength and pride of the Aboriginal people was loud and clear.

I felt tears well up when I listened to Archie Roache sing about being from his home taken as a three year old and his lifetime of longing for his mother. I tried to imagine what it would have been like as a young child to dream of going home to his family. I am so sorry.

I am really looking forward to participating and learning more about our long, rich Australian culture.

Anyone who is interested can meet at the Separation St entrance of the car park of Darebin Parklands on Sunday 17th November at 1pm or 3pm. After the walk refreshments and entertainment will be provided.
