Month of FREE Christmas events at Fed Square

Fed Square, despite its shaky beginnings, is now the pulsating heart and concrete soul of Melbourne. And I mean that in the nicest way. It is where people meet, stop and gather. Although the steps are a bit hard on the old bottom.

It is the scene of nearly every multicultural event in Melbourne throughout the year. So people have learnt to bring a cushion. And at Christmas time people are drawn out of their suburbs, their apartment blocks and hidey-hole offices to celebrate at Fed Square.

That's because Fed Square has a fabulous and totally free set of events in the lead up to Christmas.

But let's start with the grand finale -- Christmas Day where the square celebrates Orphan's Christmas. This is a lovely idea and shows the true spirit of Christmas. Lots of people find themselves alone on Christmas Day for all kinds of reasons. There are empty nesters whose kids have gone off travelling. Many people come from other parts of the country or the world and have no family in Melbourne. Other have lost contact with family for whatever reason.

Fed Square offers them an alternative place to gather on Christmas Day to enjoy Christmas with others. There is a movie marathon on the Big Screen between 11am - 6pm. You simply have to bring along a picnic basket and find a posey among the installation of more than 100 Christmas trees to celebrate the day with others. There is a clip on last year's Orphan's Christmas below.

As an alternative I love Julie Mundy's ideas for celebrating Orphan's Christmas click here.

In the lead up to Christmas there is also a host of other events to attract people to Fed Square. For a start Fed Square looks all christmasy with its 100 Christmas trees by urban artists. But don't use any of them as a landmark because they transform each week creating different patterns, mazes and secret hidey holes.

These spaces make for some great picnic spots for families, games of hide and seek and it is also a fantastic venue for family portraits from the wandering photographer. You are then able to download these photographs (all for free). Click here. Family Portraits, amongst the trees are available every weekend, on Saturdays and Sundays between 12pm – 4pm.

There are also lots of great activities including free music events such as community choirs, films, and games.

Every Monday between 5-9pm, for example, you can play video games on the Big Screen with the team from Freeplay Independent Gaming.
Festival.

While on: 3, 10, 11, 17, 18 21 December, from 6.30pm
you can use one of the deckchairs to watch classic Christmas films as well as block-buster movies on the Big Screen. While every Thursday evening during December there are free acoustic music sets. These run between 5.30pm – 7pm

But what would Christmas be without food. On the weekend of the 14th and 15th of December (11am – 4pm) there is a Christmas food market that includes Christmas treats from Fed Square's many restaurants and cafes.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas at our Fed Square.
