Spelling bees aren't just for grammar school anymore. City-wide, you can relive your spelling glory days with these adults-only bees.
The original adult spelling - the
Williamsbug Spelling Bee - can be found at Pete's Candy Store, hosted by bee founder Bobby Blue and comedian Jennifer Dziura.
The spelling bee launches its 13th season on Feb. 7, holding about two spelling bees a month until the finals on June 6. Best part - anyone is welcome to join. Sign up begins at 7 pm for the 7:30 pm bee. You can even stay up-to-date on Bee happenings at
its blog.
It didn't take very long for the Williamsburg Spelling Bee to also spawn a Manhattan offshoot,
New York city Spelling Bee, for those who don't feel like heading to Brooklyn. This adults-only bee is also hosted by Bobby Blue and Jen Dziura.
You can find the spinoff four times a year at Housing Works Bookstore in SoHo. This one will cost you $10, but proceeds go toward the bookstore, which benefits homeless New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS.
Try your hand at either location and bring out your inner geek and show off your mad spelling skills. Or, if you're so inclined, you can just sit back, have some drinks and eat some free popcorn. And that's how you spell F-U-N.
