Sometimes we forget about what's in our own back yard. Take
Southbank, for instance. I live all of half an hour away, had to go down there for something recently, and was totally blown away by its fantastic atmosphere and endless things to see and do, all alongside the lovely Yarra River.
I knew it was there, but I forgot. So, how about spending a day on this lovely leisure, dining and entertainment strip that stretches along the southern bank of the Yarra River starting at Princes Bridge?
Maybe you'd like to check out the entertaining buskers and street performers cajoling and cavorting? You're bound to get a laugh – or three.
Or maybe, try some brunching, lunching or dining in one of the dozens of trendy waterfront
bars, cafes or restaurants that line the strip with their pretty umbrellas.
Then there are the
river cruises of every description, whether upstream or downstream, or on a gondola or luxury yacht.
Southbank lies in the heart of the state's arts and culture hub, so you might also like to check out what's on at the
Arts Centre, or perhaps head in on a Sunday for the
Sunday Market.
Oh, and just for the sake of clarity, Southbank refers both to the
suburb of Southbank as well as the strip, whose official name is Southbank Promenade at its western end and Southgate Promenade at its eastern end.
Southgate refers to the designated shopping and dining complex and, yes, it's located on the promenade.
Then there's South Bank (note the space) in Brisbane, and in London on the south bank of the Thames, but that's another story…
