A progressive dinner at South Wharf is a great way to get a feel for Melbourne's newest waterside precinct where heritage cargo sheds have been transformed into innovative restaurants.

The idea of a progressive dinner is that you graze. An entree in one restaurant, a main in another and a dessert in yet another.

And the great thing about the three venues is that they all have great views overlooking the Yarra.

The evening starts off at #8206 ;">Byblos Bar & Restaurant with a selection of Mediterranean dips.

From this Aladdin's cave you toddle down the boardwalk for Japanese at the well-known #8206 ;">Kobe Jones and Riverside Teppanyaki Bar . Here you can experience food as theatre as the chefs amuse you with their culinary wizardry and antics.

Dessert is at The Wharf Hotel which again has stunning views over the water and good winter fare such as apple pie with cinnamon ice cream and sticky date pudding.

I think the value is excellent ($55 for a night on the town at three different restaurants).

Dinners are only running until the end of June, with sittings at 6.30pm and 7.30pm.
