South Stradbroke Island

Home > Things to do in Brisbane > Outdoor
Published February 28th 2011
Until 1896, North and South Stradbroke Island formed one large sand island but constant heavy storms eventually caused the islands to split. The two islands are separated by the Jumpinpin Channel. While North Stradbroke Island, the larger of the two, is a well populated tourist attraction, South Stradbroke (which is only two kilometres wide) is a quieter holiday destination with many pockets of protected forest.

South Stradbroke Island is popular with families and anyone seeking a quiet, laid back island retreat. The largely undeveloped island offers a range of natural attractions.

What to do:

The island contains twenty-two kilometres of beach on the western and eastern shores. These beaches are good for surfing but are unpatrolled so are not recommended for swimming. The interior of the island contains rainforest and wetlands for hiking and bushwalking. The islands resorts provide tourist tours and packages like canoeing, jet skiing, fishing and rock climbing.

Where to stay:

South Stradbroke Island has camping sites and one resort.

Couran Point Island Beach Resort is located on South Stradbroke Island Conservation Park. It offers hotel style accommodation and features on the resort include a swimming pool, heated spa, tennis and basketball courts, putt-putt and water sports activities.

There are four camping grounds on South Stradbroke Island. Bedrooms Campground and Tipplers Campground are located to the north of the island; you can make a booking by calling the Ranger on (07) 5577 2849. North and South Currigee Campgrounds are located to the south of the island; you can make a booking by calling the Ranger on (07) 5577 3932. All campgrounds have shower and toilet facilities; all except Bedrooms have hot showers.

Getting there:

Broadwater Taxi offers ferry service between Runaway Bay Marina and South Stradbroke Island.
