Grab your enviro-friendly shopping bags – or maybe a trolley for filling with fabulous fare! South Melbourne Market is packed not only with farm-fresh food, but with oodles of necessities (and not-so-necessities…) for home and garden too.

This market has a very long history. It's been around forever – and with very good reason. The much-loved Melbourne market, the city's oldest continuing market, opened in 1867 and forms an integral part of Melbourne's food history. It housed the stalls, products and produce of many of our earliest migrants, with many of their families continuing the tradition through the generations.

Amidst its hustle and bustle, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and personal. If you get to know your favourite stallholders, they'll always look after you with the best gear at the best prices. You also get to enjoy plenty of great chats with interesting folks.

As well as fruit, veg, meat, seafood, chicken and organic foods, you'll also find sumptuous deli items, artisan breads, free range eggs, aromatic coffee, nuts, yummy chocolates, sweets, and a whole bunch more. Check out some of the stallholders here.

While the market experience itself makes it well worth a visit, there are always plenty of interesting events happening to entertain young and old. Look out for singing butchers, kids' colouring competitions, fashion parades and various special surprises that dot the market calendar.

Upcoming cooking classes will have you whipping up a storm in no time, but here are some recipes in the meantime. The paella looks good 'n' easy.

The Gourmet Market Tours are a foodlover's delight. For $30, you're shown around the market, get to learn loads about the various products and stalls (including some inside secrets) and, perhaps best of all, you get to graze your way through a host of yummy tastings! Now that's a pretty nice way to spend a Saturday morning.
