You would think with the many beautiful gardens we have in Adelaide and surrounds there would be more garden events. However with the closing of the Australian Garden Scheme this June, it will be slim pickings for garden lovers. The folks up in Clare first held this event in 2014, and it returns again this Autumn. The SA Autumn Garden Festival, which organisers claim is the only garden festival in the State. However I don't know why it is being called a festival if only held on one day, nor is it held over the State. Festivals are a group of events held over a period of days or even weeks with a wide variety of events in the programme. The website is called the northern garden festival, see here which is a different to the name of that of the event itself and with only a month away at time of writing, is brief in content.

There will be plenty on for the day, with many stall with all things garden related such as garden furniture and decor, ornaments and sculptures, and of course many plant stalls. Food and drink stalls are available for a lunch break. This is a community event and will make a good day out for all the family.

During the day you can hear some gardening experts talk. Milton Vadoulis, radio and television personality will be there. He is the owner of that wonderful nursery, Vadoulis Garden Centre, in Gawler, and is a past president of the Nursery & Garden Industry. Also speaking is Chris Perry, radio personality and owner of Perry's Fruit & Nut Nursery at McLaren Flat. The Perry's have been growing fruit and nut trees for 35 years so it's good to see they are coming up north to share their knowledge.

The SA Autumn Garden Festival is presented by the Clare Agricultural & Horticultural Society. Proceeds will go towards beautifying the Clare Showgrounds. There will be monster raffle which will support the Clare CFS & and RST Roseworthy.

Perhaps if this event continues to show merit, the organisers may extend the days and introduce a wider programme with some open gardens, and workshops for example. This event has the makings of becoming a tourist magnet if other venues and hands on activities are introduced. After seeing whats on offer at the showgrounds you could visit and few wineries or simply have a drive around, because Autumn is simply the best time to visit the beautiful Clare Valley. The vines are now golden and the air is fresh, so garden lovers, come up north and spend a day in the country.
