The nobleman who ordered the building of
Somerset House was beheaded before he had the chance to see it. Luckily, modern visitors can expect a much warmer reception, incluing the finest art, music and food.
This grand stately home overlooking the Thames has something to suit everyone.
Performances in the grounds range from brand new dance from today's choreographers to summer concerts that have included Snow Patrol, We Are Scientists and Amy Winehouse. Open-air film showings offer the chance to enjoy cinematic greats in a truly unique environment.
But these events are only the cherry on top of a sumptuous cake. The historic site and fine architecture, which can be explored through guided tours, also house ever-changing art exhibitions. For those who prefer to get stuck in to their culture, drop in workshops are often available to flex the creative muscles.
The winter months make their mark too, with an outdoor ice rink springing up whenever Christmas comes around.
Finally, foodies won't have far to go to get their fix of fine dining: Michelin-starred chef Tom Aiken is on hand to make sure that no sense goes unstimulated.
