The event takes place at Somerset College on the Gold Coast and is open to everyone, with both adults and children's events. Hosting children from over 55 schools, it brings recognised writers to the Gold Coast community, to offer a full and stimulating program of events promoting reading and writing. Although the Festival is supported by businesses, it efficiently runs on the cheerful goodwill of hundreds of volunteers.
To all those who have a passion for reading and writing, put the date in your diary and come and indulge yourself.
Check out this You Tube video which celebrates the fact that there is nothing quite like a real book, despite the theme explored of "going beyond the book" at this year's festival.
More about the Festival
Chairperson, Dr. Michael Brohier (Image courtesy of the Somerset College Website)
Somerset Celebration of Literature has grown and transformed throughout its 19 year history but continues to hold at its core: "the unwavering belief in the value of reading and writing and the on-going commitment to contributing to the cultural capital of the Gold Coast" says Chairperson, Dr. Michael Brohier.
Somerset College educates and entertains visiting schools and members of the public, with its author and illustrator sessions. The Festival Guide is a comprehensive program detailing sessions, workshops and functions, and includes author biographies.
The event culminates with a literary dinner at The Radisson Resort Gold Coast with guest speaker: Sandy Mackinnon, during which the winner of the National Novella Writing Competition is announced.
I am keen to attend the Tristan Bancks Workshop, in which we are encouraged to 'Move beyond the page with this workshop on connecting with the digital realm'. This year, the Somerset Celebration of Literature is embracing the theme of going 'beyond the book'.
Once you have decided which events you wish to attend you can purchase your tickets online.

The Writers' Wall
The Writers' Wall will return in 2012, so stop by and add your own piece. 2011 visitors were challenged with the following questions:
"Did an author's quote really stand out to you?
What is your favourite thing about the Somerset Writers' Festival?
What inspires you to keep reading?"
Be part of the event and leave your thoughts.
